Alexandria, VA — October 19, 2024 – Today marks a major milestone in the nursing community as National DNPs of Color Day commemorates the founding of DNPs of Color, a nonprofit organization established in 2018. This year’s celebration holds special significance as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, a pivotal moment in the evolution of nursing.

DNPs of Color was created to promote diversity in nursing through networking, mentorship, and advocacy, fostering an inclusive environment that strengthens representation in nursing practice. The organization’s mission is more important than ever as nurses of color continue to face unique challenges in doctoral studies, clinical practice, and leadership roles.

The week-long celebration kicks off with the Dr. Virginia Allen & Mary Eliza Mahoney Scholarship and Awards Gala at the Franklin Institute. This prestigious event honors trailblazers in nursing and highlights emerging leaders who are making significant contributions to their communities.

National DNP Week, which begins today, celebrates the essential role DNPs play in healthcare while highlighting the growing impact of nurses of color in shaping the future of the profession. Dr. Danielle K. McCamey, founder and CEO of DNPs of Color, remarked, “Bringing together the 20th anniversary of the DNP degree with the founding of DNPs of Color in October allows us to reflect on how far we’ve come and the vital role nurses of color play in transforming healthcare.”

The week continues on October 20 with a virtual fundraiser for ArtWell Philly, a nonprofit supporting youth through multidisciplinary arts. On October 21, Mount Sinai Nursing Research & Innovation will host a webinar featuring the Translational Research and Implementation Science for Nurses (TRAIN) Program, a cutting-edge initiative advancing nursing research and innovation.

National DNP Week concludes on October 25 with a virtual happy hour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the DNP degree. DNP graduates, students, and professionals from across the country will come together to reflect on the evolution of the degree and look toward its future.

“As the only organization solely dedicated to supporting nurses of color with DNP degrees, DNPs of Color is proud to lead this celebration of diversity, leadership, and the continued growth of the DNP profession,” said Dr. McCamey.
